Emily Aery Jones, assistant professor of neurobiology, University of Maryland School of Medicine

What do you study? What part of your research are you most excited about?

My lab dissects how the hippocampus can flexibly perform distinct computations to support spatial memory. We’re broadly interested in how inputs along the circuit are received and processed at appropriate times to encode new information or retrieve and consolidate old information without those functions conflicting. In parallel, we also study how these computations degrade in aging and Alzheimer’s disease. I’m most excited about a new research direction we’re exploring: studying how neural circuits process information depending on context and task demands.

Are there any traditions or practices from the labs you trained at that you will implement in your own lab?

My postdoc lab mentor Lisa Giocomo encouraged everyone to take the time to build something. Everyone built their own acquisition rig, designed a new behavior paradigm and wrote their own code. Some designed new surgical techniques, and others introduced new recording technology. Everyone made something new and amazing, and discovered fundamental truths about how the brain works as a result. I encourage my trainees to take their time building well-tested and innovative acquisition and analysis systems rather than rushing to collect data. I hope that everyone in my lab leaves understanding how each element of our lab’s data ecosystem works, from the electrical engineering underlying electrodes to the linear algebra that helps us interpret how behavior arises from that neural activity.

What is the best advice you received from a mentor or colleague before opening your lab?

Several mentors told me over the years, when I asked about how to select the right trainees, “You cannot hire only yourself.” Meaning that if you only hire lab members with your exact credentials and skills, you’ll never find anyone to hire. I think about that a lot when deciding whether someone’s unique background would make them an asset to the lab, broadening our knowledge and skills, or would make them underqualified. It’s also a helpful reminder that I am always mentoring people who are not me, so replicating the training I received won’t necessarily work for them. I am constantly learning how to be a better mentor in that way.

Hayoung Song, assistant professor of psychology, University of Texas at Austin

What do you study? What part of your research are you most excited about?

We study how people use memories to make inferences and how attention varies across situations and individuals. We explain these phenomena by studying neural systems and dynamics using functional MRI and by building models that simulate how the brain works. For instance, I recently built a neural network that encodes and retrieves memories while watching a movie, and what emerged was causal reasoning ability. I was immediately drawn to this new “model organism.” I want to build artificial agents that simulate brain circuits and think and behave like humans in naturalistic settings. This will allow us to ask why the brain has to be wired the way it does to produce real-world human behavior.

Are there any traditions or practices from the labs you trained at that you will implement in your own lab?

One of the many things I learned from my mentor, Monica Rosenberg, was to treat every talk like a job talk. Always bring your A game, no matter the occasion. Practicing this significantly improved my scientific communication skills. It takes me less time to perfect slides now. I would love to share this practice with my lab members.

What is the best advice you received from a mentor or colleague before opening your lab?

When I first learned science from my mentor Won Mok Shim in Korea, she told me that science is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. Science is not something we achieve in a few years, but rather it is something we continuously build upon. I shouldn’t sprint just because I’m feeling passionate, and I shouldn’t give up just because things get tricky. I anticipate many excitements and hardships ahead as I start the lab, but I will always try to remember this advice.
