In this “Brain Inspired” episode, Paul Middlebrooks is joined by Henk de Regt, professor of philosophy of natural sciences and director of the Institute for Science in Society at Radboud University. In 2017, de Regt developed a pragmatic account of what it means for a scientist to understand what they study, detailed in his book, “Understanding Scientific Understanding.” Now he is exploring how we might have a common measure of understanding in both artificial-intelligence agents and humans, how understanding differs between experts and the public, and more.
Does AI understand what it produces? Henk de Regt explores how we might assess understanding in machines and humans
Building on his philosophy of how scientists understand what they work on, de Regt is extending his approach to test understanding in machines.
