Rajesh Rao reflects on predictive brains, neural interfaces and the future of human intelligence

Twenty-five years ago, Rajesh Rao proposed a seminal theory of how brains could implement predictive coding for perception. His modern version zeroes in on actions.

In this episode, Paul Middlebrooks talks with Rajesh Rao, distinguished professor of computer science and engineering at the University of Washington and co-director of the Center for Neurotechnology, about his newly updated proposal for how our neocortex constantly predicts our actions and perceptions across the hierarchy of our brain. They also discuss some of Rao’s other projects, including augmenting our cognition with artificial intelligence, connecting multiple brains together and deciphering the ancient Indus script.
