In this episode of “Brain Inspired” Paul Middlebrooks talks with Alexander Maier, associate professor of psychology at Vanderbilt University, who makes the case that a scientific explanation of consciousness must be grounded in formalized mathematics, much like all other fundamental laws of nature. Integration information theory does just that, while also respecting the phenomenological, first-person perspective of subjective experience. The hope and promise is to directly map our conscious experience onto a formal mathematical structure, resulting in laws of consciousness.
