Early independence: clinician scientist fellowship (human health | UK)

Medical Research Council (MRC)

The Early independence: clinician scientist fellowship by Medical Research Council (MRC) supports clinically active researchers who have completed a PhD or equivalent and demonstrate evidence of career consolidation and productivity. The award enables fellows to establish their own independent research niche, lead their own research plans, and begin building a research team. Applicants must be registered healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, pharmacists, clinical psychologists, dentists, or veterinarians, with a research focus relevant to human health.

Key areas of research include:

  • Infections and immunity
  • Molecular and cellular medicine
  • Population and systems medicine
  • Neurosciences and mental health
  • Translational research and global health

The fellowship funds up to 5 years of support, covering 80% of the full economic cost, including salary, project costs, research staff, consumables, equipment, travel, training, and public engagement activities. Fellows may undertake up to two clinical sessions per week (up to four for patient-oriented projects) and can spend up to 12 months at a second UK or overseas organisation to develop collaborative networks. Joint funding is available with selected charities and royal colleges.

Applications close on April 8, 2026.
