Engineering Next-Generation Human Nervous System Microphysiological Systems (R21 Clinical Trials Not Allowed | worldwide)

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

The Engineering Next-Generation Human Nervous System Microphysiological Systems (R21 Clinical Trials Not Allowed) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports the development of the next-generation human cell-derived microphysiological systems (MPS) and related assays that replicate complex nervous system architectures and physiology with improved fidelity over current capabilities. Supported projects will be expected to enable future studies of complex nervous system development, function and aging in healthy and disease states. The R21 grant mechanism is intended to encourage exploratory/developmental research by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of project development. Applications are open to researchers at research institutions in the USA and worldwide.

The grant provides funding up to 275,000 USD for up to 2 years (plus indirect costs).

Funding opportunity number: PAR-25-199

Applications close on: October 16, 2025.
