The BRAIN Initiative: Research Opportunities Using Invasive Neural Recording and Stimulating Technologies in the Human Brain (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports transformative, mechanistic research on how the human brain functions.
This call supports research using invasive surgical procedures such as intracranial recording or stimulation to reveal how neurons and neuronal ensembles in spatially organized networks give rise to sensations, perceptions, emotions, thoughts, memories, and motor and social behaviors.
Applications are open to organizations and government entities based in the USA. Interdisciplinary teams of clinicians, scientists, device engineers, computational and data scientists, and regulatory and neuroethics experts are essential.
Opportunity number: RFA-NS-28-010
NIH and the participating institutes intend to commit up to 8,000,000 USD to fund 5 awards per receipt date, with most awards not expected to exceed 1,000,000 USD in direct costs. The maximum project period is 5 years.
Applications open on January 8, 2027. Applications close on February 8, 2027, with additional annual cycles closing on February 8, 2028, and February 8, 2029.
