The Capacity building: clinical research training fellowship by Medical Research Council (MRC) provides funding for healthcare professionals who have previously completed a PhD but have not been active in research for several years, enabling them to reacquire research skills and pursue a research career. Eligible applicants include doctors, dentists, veterinarians, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, clinical psychologists, pharmacists, and healthcare scientists.

Projects can focus on any area within MRC’s remit, including:

  • Infections and immunity
  • Molecular and cellular medicine
  • Population and systems medicine
  • Neurosciences and mental health
  • Translation and global health research
  • Public health and methodology

The fellowship typically last 3 years and funds 80% of the full economic cost, covering the fellow’s salary, project costs, training activities, research consumables, equipment, travel, and up to 12 months at a second organisation or overseas. Joint funding from collaborating organisations is also possible.
