The Population and systems medicine: programme: responsive mode funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC) supports research programs focused on population and systems medicine. Applicants must be a researcher employed by a research organisation eligible to apply for Medical Research Council (MRC) funding and has an established track record of research funding. Proposed projects may be in the following areas:

  • cardiovascular
  • respiratory
  • musculoskeletal
  • gastroenterology
  • renal medicine and liver function
  • endocrinology and reproductive health
  • maternal health and the early origins of health and disease
  • nutrition, metabolic regulation, diabetes and obesity
  • trauma, acute medicine and surgery
  • inflammation in relation to disease processes and the resolution of the inflammatory response
  • medical sociology
  • lifestyle, socio-economic and behavioural impacts on health
  • health inequalities
  • population and disease related cohorts

There is no limit to the funding budget, MRC funds 80% of the full economic cost for up to 5 years. Application rounds close every January, May and September.

Pre-applications close July 7, 2025, and full applications close September 4, 2025.
