Renato Duarte is assistant researcher at the University of Coimbra’s Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology and Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology. He works on biophysically grounded models of cortical circuits to study how neural systems learn, adapt and compute. His work focuses on heterosynaptic and subcellular plasticity, the regulation of synaptic learning by neuromodulation and metaplasticity, and the circuit mechanisms of working memory, sequence learning and rule-based representations.
Duarte holds a B.A. in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Coimbra and an M.Sc. in cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology from the University of Algarve. He earned his Ph.D. in computational neuroscience through the EuroSPIN program at the University of Freiburg and the University of Edinburgh in 2018. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Forschungszentrum Jülich and assistant professor of cognitive artificial intelligence at Radboud University before returning to Coimbra in 2024.
